Sky Cinema's new releases in August

Find out which new films are coming this August.

August will see some excellent films added to Sky Cinema, featuring everything from chaotic comedians to love-hating killers and superfast hedgehogs.

Read on for all the new releases coming to Sky Cinema this month.

Sky Cinema new releases: What’s on in August

Long Gone Heroes - 1st August

Action movie in the vein of classic overblown rescue/revenge thrillers like CommandoTaken and Man on Fire. You get the gist - young woman gets abducted by bad guys, and only a growling, gun-toting ex-soldier can get her back.

Stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Josh Hutcherson (Five Nights at Freddy’s).

The Thicket - 2nd August

Gritty revenge western starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Juliette Lewis (From Dusk Til Dawn). Also James Hetfield! The frontman of Metallica! In a western! That’s worth a look just by itself.

The Room Next Door - 3rd August

Heavy-hitting drama from celebrated Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar - in his English-language film debut. Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Tilda Swinton (Asteroid City) star as lifelong best friends whose relationship is tested when one of them becomes terminally ill and begins to consider taking her own life.

Emotional stuff.

September 5 - 7th August

Tense drama based on a true story, following a crew of untested sportscasters at the 1972 Munich Olympics who are thrust into covering the developing hostage crisis. It’s an interesting angle on a story that’s been told on film multiple times, and really gets into some meaty ethical debates.

Stars Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead) and John Magaro (Past Lives).

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - 8th August

Family-friendly action adventure sequel about an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds. What a sentence.

This time around, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles must face off against the evil alien hedgehog Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves of all people) - and may be forced to team up with moustachioed villain Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to defeat him.

Gator Creek - 9th August

Schlocky animal attack horror movie that asks the age-old question - what if Cocaine Bear, but alligators?

When DEA agents bust a drug factory deep in the swamps of Louisiana, the drug-laced run-off creates a race of super-aggressive gators. Just in time for a group of disposable students to crash land in the swamp.

Really, what more could you want in a movie?

Heart Eyes - 14th August

Credit: HEART EYES - Official Trailer (HD) (Sony Pictures Entertainment, YouTube)

Slasher-slash-romantic-comedy starring Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream VI). A first date takes a turn for the fatal when a prospective pair of lovers are stalked by a masked killer targeting couples.

Expect the same sort of fun, comedic horror mashup as (executive producer here) Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day and Freaky.

Saturday Night - 15th August

Chaotic comedy drama about the first live taping of now-legendary sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle, The Fabelmans) must overcome studio pressure, bad jokes and an extremely unreliable cast - including the likes of Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien) and, of course, John Belushi (Matt Wood) - to get the show out on time.

The Mountain - 16th August

Coming-of-age comedy drama from New Zealand, about a trio of children - one of whom is undergoing chemotherapy - who attempt to scale Mount Taranaki to reconnect with their Maori heritage.

The Surfer - 22nd August

Credit: The Surfer (2025) Official Trailer - Nicolas Cage (Lionsgate Movies, YouTube)

Psychological thriller starring Nic Cage as a - you guessed it - surfer, who returns to the remote Australian beach where he grew up to ride the waves with his son. Unfortunately, they run afoul of some local bullies, and things escalate from there.

Incredibly tense and, in true Nic Cage style, absolutely nuts.

Into the Wonderwoods - 23rd August

Animated adventure about a 10-year-old who, left alone at a rest stop on a family road trip, ventures into the woods and encounters fantastical creatures.

Night Call - 24th August

Action thriller from Belgium, following a young locksmith called out during the night to unlock a door that plunges him into danger.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim - 29th August

Credit: The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim | Official Trailer (Warner Bros, YouTube)

Lavish animated prequel to Peter Jackson’s seminal trilogy. Set 183 years before the events of Fellowship of the Ring, this follows the fortunes of the House of Helm Hammerhand, and their war against a former ally.

Stars the voice talents of Mirando Otto (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and Brian Cox (X-Men 2)

Restless - 30th August

Darkly funny psychological thriller. A mild-mannered care worker’s life is thrown into turmoil when a terrifying party animal moves in next door.

Subjected to endless sleepless nights, her sanity begins to unravel and she’s drawn into an escalating, dangerous war with her unruly neighbour. We’ve all been there.

The Prosecutor - 31st August

Action blockbuster from Hong Kong. Martial arts legend Donnie Yen (Ip Man) stars as a cop-turned-prosecutor who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth when a man falsely pleads guilty to a drug trafficking charge.
