Weekly trailer roundup 10/10

The biggest, most exciting new movie and TV trailers this week.

We live in a golden age of entertainment, with great new movies and TV shows being released all the time. There’s so much, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track of what’s coming, and what to get excited about.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the biggest and best trailers released this week. And, as always, there’s some good stuff in there, featuring everything from Marmalade-obsessed bears to seafaring explorers to Bob Dylan.

Movies

Moana 2

In cinemas 27th November 2024

This long-awaited sequel to the megahit 2016 animated epic is set three years after the original, and finds Moana setting out on a new voyage to bring together all the people of the ocean.

Reprising their roles are Auliʻi Cravalho as the intrepid hero and Dwayne Johnson as shapeshifting demigod Maui, although it’s a shame that Lin-Manuel Miranda isn’t returning to provide the songs. Regardless, the animation looks stunning and the story seems suitably epic, so here’s hoping Moana 2 lives up to the promise of the excellent first film.

Paddington in Peru

In cinemas 8th November 2024

Paddington in Peru has some big shoes to fill.

Following up the one-two punch of 2014’s Paddington and its 2017 sequel - two of the most beloved, critically-acclaimed films of the 21st century - is no small feat. Especially when you take into account that director Paul King, who masterfully helmed the first two films, and Sally Hawkins, who wonderfully played the key role of Mrs Brown, aren’t returning for this threequel.

But it’s not all bad news! The incoming cast includes Antonio Banderas and Olivia Colman, the action has been shifted from London to Darkest Peru and, judging by the trailer, the film looks to have the same odd sense of humour and, crucially, the same nuclear levels of charm as its predecessors.

We’ll find out if it can trouble Paddington 2 for the title of Best Movie of All Time very soon.

Heretic

In cinemas 8th November 2024

Hugh Grant continues his fantastic late-career run of villainous roles (see also: Paddington 2 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves) in this horror thriller from indie powerhouse A24. Two young Mormons call on a seemingly normal house, but are soon trapped and forced to play a strange game that will test their faith and will to survive.

It’s certainly a fun horror concept, and there’s some interesting stylistic stuff on display in the trailer. Plus it’ll be worth a watch for Grant’s sinister charisma alone. Also stars Sophie Thatcher (The Boogeyman) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans).

A Complete Unknown

In cinemas 25th December 2024

A starry biopic of folk legend Bob Dylan, starring Timothy Chalamet (Dune) and directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line).

This one is already starting to generate some awards buzz, and Chalamet seems to be doing a decent impression of the mercurial singer. He’s also reportedly doing all of his own singing in the film, which is pretty impressive.

Should be worth a watch, even if you’re not a huge fan of Dylan’s music. Also stars Edward Norton (Asteroid City) and Elle Fanning (The Great).

The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol

In cinemas 2025

Another biopic, this one about legendary French filmmaker and playwright Marcel Pagnol. Written and directed by Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) and brought to life with typically lavish animation, this follows Pagnol as an old man, struggling to write his own biography - until a visit from his younger self.

Any film by Chomet is something to pay attention to, and if it’s anything like his previous work this one is likely to end up at next year’s Oscars. Plus, it looks suitably filled with magic and emotion and brilliantly weird characters.

TV Shows

What We Do in the Shadows

On Disney+ 22nd October 2024

A spooky treat just in time for Halloween: the sixth and final season of the acclaimed mockumentary series will be premiering before the end of the month.

Spinning off from the 2014 movie of the same name, this series follows the everyday lives of a group of vampires living on Staten Island. It’s hilarious, weird, dark and daft in equal measure, and it’s all available to stream on Disney+ - so why not get caught up in time for the new season?

It’s Florida, Man

On HBO 18th October 2024 and Sky Atlantic soon

The internet has long been obsessed with the legend of ‘Florida Man’: not a single person (and not always a man), but rather a collection of increasingly absurd, outlandish news headlines from the strange southern state. ‘Florida Man Throws Alligator Through Wendy's Drive-Thru Window’, ‘Florida Man Attacked By Squirrel During Selfie’, and so on. You get the idea.

This new HBO limited series picks out six of the most outrageous (true) Florida Man stories and brings them to life, mixing documentary-style interviews with the real-life culprits and dramatisations starring an array of all-star comedic talent. It’s a great concept and should make for a thoroughly entertaining watch.

Stars (among others) Anna Faris (Scary Movie), Juliette Lewis (From Dusk Til Dawn) and Sam Richardson (Veep).

The Day of the Jackal

On Sky 7th November 2024

A new adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 political thriller novel (previously adapted in 1973 with Edward Fox and in 1997 with Bruce Willis), this stars Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) as the chameleonic assassin.

Promising a modern update on the classic source material, this should be a gripping, bingeworthy watch when it releases on Sky early next month. Also stars Lashana Lynch (Skyfall).
